Can I Sell Vintage or Rare Coins?

If your coin is made of precious metal, we will buy it! However at Cheshire Gold Xchange, we usually don’t offer on coins based on numismatic value. We will price coins based on a bullion only status/calculation. Some coins such as full and half Sovereigns, sell at premium above their weight in gold. We will apply additional value based on this, but we would not factor in rarity of certain dates or designs. We offer a fixed price per coin type. As we are a specialist bullion dealer, our prices are still often way above what a coin collector may pay you including any numismatic premium.

You may see certain dated coins advertised at a premium through online platforms like eBay, and Vinted etc. But it’s important to look at recent ‘sold’ listings as these high advertised prices are often owners just chancing their luck and don’t reflect the true realistic value of the coin. Selling through these sites, presents their own set of risks, with security if you are offering a collection only listing, selling fees, and the risk of return fraud. We always recommend our potential sellers to obtain a quote from us and use this as a benchmark.

Our simple approach to pricing precious metal coins means you know exactly what price to expect, and you can sell instantly at the advertised price.

    Can I sell damaged coins?

We are buyers of all silver and gold coins in any condition. Most coins such as full sovereigns coins and half sovereigns coins will hold their value in gold weight. But there is usually a premium paid above gold weight on bullion coins, we wouldn’t price Royal Mint coins at scrap price. The only time scrap price would be paid on a coin is if its damaged enough to significantly alter the overall weight, or the condition is too poor to resell as a coin.

Coins can often get damaged if they are mounted in pendants or rings, the claw mounts can occasionally cause damage to the coin making it unable to be resold and may end up as scrap. You also see coins spot welded to mounts, the weld causes permanent damage and we would not be able to resell the coin as it is. This is not anything to worry about though, as the coin still has a lot of value in the gold weight which we can pay very highly on.

Historically, coins used to be clipped at the edge by holders, removing a sliver of precious metal each time. Essentially stealing precious metal from the coin. This would alter the weight and appearance of the coin making it difficult for us to resell. This is not seen so much anymore as coins have reeded edges to help prevent this.

Any usual wear to the coins design, especially if the coin is old usually doesn’t present too much of an issue.

    Are home visits available?

Many of our clients who have large collections, or coin investments may not feel comfortable transporting their bullion, they may have a large house clearance or probate estate that needs valuing. We can offer home visits allowing you to sell your coins from the comfort of your home.

Our Warrington store is disabled friendly, but our coin valuations from home service offers a convenient service for those who are less mobile.

Considerations for Selling your Gold Coins for Cash

If you have decided to sell gold coins or silver coins this is not like selling gold and silver jewellery. Jewellery is a consumer good, while coins are considered gold bullion of sorts and in some circumstances legal tender. However, we do see the two areas cross over with Sovereign coin mounted rings and pendants, which were highly popular through the 90’s.

Gold and silver coins hold their value better than many jewellery pieces. This is mainly due to the labour and design time spent on jewellery vs coins. You are paying a premium above the spot Gold price on jewellery as you are also cover costs of intricate manufacturing, designers, marketing etc. Where as coins are valued closer to spot value and will hold their value well.

Understand the Value of the Coins You Sell

Gold and silver coins are generally retailed at fixed margins above the spot price. Therefore, it is vital to be aware of their true value and to not just sell your coins at scrap price. Since many coins are produced by national mints, determining their accurate value is not a difficult task as there are lots of resources online. We can save the hard work for you, drop by to Cheshire Gold Xchange, and we can give you an accurate valuation for your precious metal coins.

As we are experts in precious metals, we can accurately test the purity of your coin, using non-destructive testing with XRF analysis. There are British coins that are minted in 24ct Gold such as the 1oz Britannia, and some Royal Mint coins are minted in 22ct like the Sovereign. Establishing an accurate purity of the coins you have, is the first step in obtaining an accurate and fair price and you want to ensure that the dealer you are choosing to sell to has this high end equipment.

Some coins can be produced unofficially, by non-authorised mints, some fake coins may also contain high amounts of gold but may have not been produced by the appropriate bodies. If this is the case we can still pay out highly, as even fake coins can still contain real gold! We can pay the highest prices in Cheshire for gold on a gram basis.

Use a Specialist Coin Dealer in Cheshire

High street pawn shops or general pre-owned goods buying stores can be easily located in most towns, the convenience can mean you can get quick cash for your silver or gold coins. However, this convenience can come at a cost. These stores will often make very low offers on precious metal coins.

Pawn shops don’t specialise in buying gold and silver, so can often offer well below market value for your coins. They work on higher margins than specialist gold coin buyers, as they have inflated overheads and expenses. Their inexperience often means they want a higher margin to allow for more room for error on inaccurate valuations. Pawn shops are technically loaning you money against your coins. So, they won’t help but offer a lower price for your gold.

Unlike these stores, we don’t borrow against the valuation of your gold coins. When you sell coins to our professional coin dealers, you get a simplified, high and transparent valuation. That leads to a fair trade of cash or bank transfer for your Sovereigns, Krugerrands, American Eagles, and other coins.

Sell Your Coins To A Trusted Coin Buyer

The best approach to sell your gold or silver coins is to choose a trusted new and old coin buyer like Cheshire Gold XChange. We are expert dealers striving to provide you with the best value for your new, vintage, and antique coins. Our prices are extremely competitve and our appresials are pegged to the ever changing precious metal spot pricing.

In an industry where there can be some bad actors and buyers looking to take advantage, selling valuable coins can be a daunting task. Choosing to sell to a business with an outstanding reputation and an excellent online rating is crucial.

With every gold coin sold to us, we provide transparent pricing and an easy exchange. That is why we have such a growing book of return and referral clients who seek out our expertise and valuations.

    How To Identify Gold Coins

Please be aware that some of the methods of testing below, can usually provide a rough guide to verifying if your coins are made of real gold. These tests are not 100% accurate and only serve as a guide. For accurate information and testing of your coins. Please contact us, bring them into our store, or send them to us via post for inspection and conclusive reliable coin testing.

    Coin Markings

The easiest way to identify your gold coins is to read the markings stamped onto the coins. These can not be 100% relied upon as some counterfeit coins will have misleading markings and stamps. You can use Google as a good reference to search the printing on your coins. Or you can contact us and we can help identify your gold coins.

In many cases, this can involve markings related to:

    • Origin of the coin (mint/distributor/production facility/etc.)
    • Date of the coin
    • Key phrases like “Fine Gold,” “Fine Silver,” or “24 carat”
    • Raised contours of the sculpting/artwork on the gold coin
    • And more

    Your Coin Height

Gold has a specific gravity of 19.3, pure gold is much heavier than many other metals. Gold coins are usually stamped/embossed with their weight ie. 1oz, so if a coin by weight does not match its stamped denomination by being either too light or too heavy its likely the coin is not made of real gold.

    Is Your Gold Coin Magnetic?

Using a standard household fridge magnet, you can perform a simple magnetism test on your coins. By rule, Gold is not magnetic, so if your coins are attracted to a magnet, its likely not real gold or may contain other metals besides pure Gold.

Don’t despair too quickly. Many American gold coins have a mixture of metals as a core. Even if you think your gold coins may be counterfeit, it never hurts to bring them by the shop. We are happy to consider their value and offer some tips so you will know what to look for when you wish to sell coins to our professional coin buyers in the future.

Looking to sell gold sovereign coins?

We are a specialist Gold Sovereign coin buyer in any quantity.

Everything You Need to Know about Sovereign Coins

Sovereign coins are a fascinating and evolving topic, with nuanced details ingrained into their history. We’ve put together a brief highlight on sovereign coins to show their value and intriguing nature.

    History and Design

Sovereigns were first introduced in 1489, during the reign of King Henry VII of England. Although this was their first time minted, they’ve since been minted in various forms with different design elements, focuses, and values.

Although designs change between each edition of sovereigns, the main design elements usually have common themes. The obverse side of a sovereign coin usually features a portrait of the reigning monarch, which can often be used as a quick way to determine when the minting of the coin was. The reverse side often showcases the classic design of Saint George slaying the dragon. This design has persisted since it was created by Italian engraver Benedetto Pistrucci in 1817.

    Sovereign Coin Value

Gold content: The consistency of pure gold value in sovereign coins has made them a favourite with collectors and investors across the globe. Sovereign coins are made using 22-karat gold. The gold content is 0.2354 troy ounces. This high gold purity is an essential tell-tale component of sovereign coins.

The difference between full & half sovereign

A full sovereign weighs 7.99 grams, and has a diameter of 22.05mm. A full sovereign coins contains 0.2354 troy ounces of pure Gold, which is equivalent to 7.3224 grams.

As the name suggests, a half sovereign is a smaller coin than a full sovereign. A half sovereign coin weighs 3.99 grams, and has a diameter of 19.30mm. A half sovereign contains 0.1177 troy ounces of pure Gold or 3.99 grams.

As a general rule, a full sovereign is valued at twice as much as a half sovereign since there is twice the amount of Gold present. You can sell your full and half sovereigns to us, we provide highly competitive pricing.

    Collector’s Appeal

Although the gold content of sovereign coins is often important in drawing people to them, they are attractive to collectors for another reason. Because each edition of sovereign coins is issued with design variations, limited editions, and commemorative versions, various coins have become important to collectors.

    Legal Tender Status

Although they are collectables, sovereign coins are still considered legal tender in the United Kingdom. As a result, they make an excellent investment option for British citizens because they are legal tender and exempt from capital gains tax for UK residents.

    Global Recognition

Sovereign coins are widely accepted as a form of payment in multiple countries. Because they are so widely recognized internationally, they make a highly liquid and easily traded asset.

    Investment Potential

Sovereign coins are widely seen as inflation and economic-uncertainty-proof. Moreover, because their value is backed by their gold content and the reputation of the issuing government, they’re seen as a safe-haven investment and provide security against financial uncertainty.

    Minting Locations

Although sovereign coins are usually associated with the UK, they have also been minted in other countries. These include Canada, South Africa, Australia, and India. The variety of minting locations adds a layer of complexity and interest for collectors and investors, ultimately adding to the value of sovereign coins.

    Pop Culture

Sovereign coins are known worldwide through the references to them made throughout pop culture. Novels, movies, and TV shows have all taken their turn, including James Bond and Sherlock Holmes, making sovereign coins as timeless and popular as the great heroes.

    Royal Mint Initiatives

In order to consistently improve the appeal of sovereign coins, the Royal Mint is always taking steps to add to the availability and collector’s appeal of the coins. Some of the ways they do this include the annual release of proof sovereigns with limited mintages and special editions. This keeps the interest of collectors and investors.

Sovereign coins are an excellent investment and collector opportunity and can be found worldwide. Click the link for more information on how you can price and sell quarter, half and full sovereign coins

    What are Gold Krugerrands?

In the late 1960s, particularly around 1967, the Republic of South Africa began producing gold coins with the intention of stimulating international trade and enhancing the nation’s value. These gold pieces were created to enable individuals to own gold and contribute to the growing volume of trade in Africa. As a result, Krugerrands, the gold coins minted during this period, have become highly sought after and rank among the most frequently exchanged gold coins worldwide.

Remarkably, even today, gold Krugerrands retain their intrinsic value. The overall assessment of these gold coins predominantly relies on prevailing market conditions during the trading period. It is worth noting that they were crafted in tribute to Paul Kruger, who served as the president of the South African Republic from 1883 to 1900.

What are American Dollars & Gold Eagles?

American Dollars are minted by the US Mint, and they’re legal tender. They contain 24k gold, which means that each coin is worth $1 when you exchange it for cash. These coins come in 1oz sizes (a full troy ounce), ½oz, ¼oz, and 1/10oz sizes, each with its own unique design on both sides of the coin.

Some special notes should be made about American gold coins. They can be made by specific causes, organizations, or presidential decrees. Even though they are minted through national sources, they may be rare or limited editions.

American Gold Eagle gold coins are a bit different. These are the USA’s official gold coins and are available annually in various weights and versions. Most of the time, they carry Lady Liberty on one side with the date and minting insignia and the bald eagle on the other side along with the designation “1 oz. fine gold.”

    Selling Pre-Decimal British Silver Coins

Many people have held onto old British silver coins, with the hope of cashing them in at a future date. If your British coins were minted pre 1947 you may find your coins hold more value than you initially thought. Prior to 1947 British coins were minted in precious metals such as gold and silver, meaning these coins will still retain some value in their precious metal weight.

For many years, the Royal Mint produced silver coins from sterling silver, an alloy composed of 92.5% pure silver. However, beginning in 1920, the silver content in British coins was reduced to 50%. By 1947, silver was completely removed from the coinage, replaced with silver-hued cupronickel.

If you hold Crowns, Half-Crowns, Florins, Shillings, Sixpences, or Three Penny Pieces dated before 1947, they are likely to contain a substantial amount of silver. Regardless of their present condition, the inherent silver content gives these coins value, and we are excited to offer you a fair price for them.

1933 Double Eagle: Just before President Franklin D Roosevelt removed USA from the gold standard, the 1933 Double Eagle is a $20 gold coin that was the last to be minted before this significant economic change. The majority of 1933 Double Eagle’s in circulation were melted down and recycled, but their were reports that some were stolen saving the gold coins from the fiery furnace. These reports were later founded when one of these Double Eagle coins was legally auctioned in 2002 for $7.59 million.
