- Does my jewellery have value above scrap/metal value?
Sometimes. Premiums above scrap can apply to:
(1) genuine period pieces with historical significance and original workmanship/maker’s marks
(2) high end designer items (e.g., Cartier, Tiffany, VCA) with proof of authenticity
(3) heavily gem-set pieces with natural, high-quality stones such as diamonds.
We pay very high, spot-linked rates for metals, so our offer can often beat the niche "resale" quotes after fees such as auction costs. If we think a collector premium applies, we’ll flag it and advise the best route (e.g. specialist dealer), or provide a bespoke offer. We always recommend getting a couple of comparison quotes before you decide to sell.
- What happens if I send a non-gold item to you?Don't worry, if an item you send turns out not to be gold or gold plated we will return this to you free of charge, or we will give you the option to donate any suitable costume jewellery to our Charity partner (Mind). If you're unsure if any jewellery you have is gold or not, include the item in your parcel anyway; we'll verify it by non-destructive testing and let you know the results via email.
- Do you buy diamonds and gemstones?No, we currently do not buy diamonds or other gemstones, and they aren’t included in our valuation. If you’d like, we can carefully remove any stones from your jewellery and return them to you on request. Please make this request prior to sending any jewellery to us.
- Do you only accept gold jewellery via the post?Yes, we currently only accept gold jewellery by post. You can sell any precious metal (including gold, silver, platinum) in person at our Warrington store.
- What happens if I’m not happy with my offer?If you use our online gold selling service and you decide you are not happy with our offer, we’ll return your jewellery to you completely free of charge, using insured and tracked delivery for your peace of mind.
- Is now a good time to sell my jewellery?
Precious metal prices are trading at record highs in 2025, with price records being broken for gold and silver. Spot prices move every minute while the markets are open. The prices are driven by global demand, supply and currency movements. As we peg all our offers to the live spot price and refresh the prices displayed on our website every five minutes, you’re guaranteed to receive an accurate, up to date, and true market value for your jewellery.
Ultimately, the right moment to cash in comes down to your personal circumstances and motivations. However, when prices sit at or near all time highs, it’s rarely a bad time to unlock the value in jewellery you no longer wear.
- Is it safe to post my gold jewellery to you?Yes, requesting one of our pre-paid gold packs allows you to return your jewellery to us using a pre-paid Royal Mail Special Delivery bag, insured for up to £2,500. For higher-value collections, you can split your gold jewellery across multiple packs.
- My jewellery has no hallmark, can I still sell it?Yes, you can. The UK Hallmarking Act 1973 only applies to traders “in the course of business,” so there is no restriction on private individuals selling unhallmarked jewellery. However, not all businesses will purchase un-hallmarked pieces, but at Cheshire Gold Xchange we have the sophisticated equipment to tell us the exact purity without relying on hallmarks.
- Can I get a jewellery valuation over the phone?Yes, you can! Give us a call and tell us the jewellery type, approximate weight, and if you can see any hallmarks to identify purity and we’ll give you a realistic ballpark figure on the phone. The final offer will be confirmed once we scan and weigh the item ourselves.
- Does plated jewellery have any scrap value?Because the precious metal layer is only a few microns thick, plated jewellery has virtually no melt or scrap value. If the base metal is a precious metal then we can value the item based on that, for example gold-plated silver will be valued for its silver content.
