How we calculate the value of your jewellery

Two pieces of information will dictate your payout: item purity and weight. The condition of the jewellery is not factored into our valuation. We will use the current market spot price and calculate a price factoring in the purity and weight of your piece. The price we pay per gram is fixed, so whether you have 1 ring or a jewellery collection you will always obtain our best price. Our XRF analysis will confirm accurate purity in seconds, and our trading standards approved scales will give us a precise weight to 1 decimal place, so you always get a transparent, and evidence based offer.

You can also do an at home valuation for gold items using our value calculator above. You can weigh your items on a digital scale, and try look for any hallmark stamps that detail the purity, such as 375 (9ct) or 750 (18ct). These hallmarks are usually found on clasps or inner bands. Enter these pieces of information into our calculator for an instant online offer.

Five ways to maximise your payout

Need cash quickly? Selling unwanted jewellery can be a smarter alternative than applying for a loan to cover those unexpected financial shortfalls, but only if you know a few insider rules. Keep these points in mind before you visit any buyer:

    • Know today’s spot price. Precious metal prices move constantly; check the price chart on our navigation bar so you recognise a fair offer.
    • Weigh your pieces. Use kitchen scales that read to 0.1g to give you a rough guide. Buyers pay by weight, not by size or condition.
    • Match the hallmark. For gold, a 9ct stamp (375) should carry a 9ct price. Higher the purity, higher the value.
    • Keep sets together. Paired earrings or bracelet and necklace sets can make valuations quicker.
    • Bring ID. UK law requires photo identification for transactions over £1,000.

How to check your gold jewellery's purity?

Under UK hallmarking laws, since 1975 it is a legal requirement for any gold, silver or platinum item over 1g to feature a purity hallmark. Look on the clasp or inside the band for numbers (for gold) such as 375 (9ct), 750 (18ct) or 916 (22ct). If your item is silver you may see a '925 mark'. If your jewellery was produced prior to this act, bought internationally, its too worn to read, or you just can’t find a mark our in-store XRF analyser can confirm purity in seconds at no charge.

Is your jewellery solid or just plated?

Spoting plated jewellery from solid can be tricky, as visually they can look identical. Plating covers a base metal with a thin layer gold or silver, only microns thick. This gives the look of a solid piece at a fraction of the cost. Here are some easy ways you can spot the difference before you look to sell:

    • Look for hallmarks. Solid items carry a purity stamp such as 375, 750 or for silver 925. Plated pieces may show GP (gold plated), GEP (gold electro plated), RGP (rolled gold plate), or may have no mark at all.
    • Use a magnet. Real gold and silver are not magnetic; a strong fridge magnet will attract most plated steel cores. Please note this test only works if the base metal used is magnetic.
    • Rub with a soft cloth. Sterling silver leaves a black tarnish mark, while silver plated brass often shows a yellow tinge where the coating wears off.
    • Look for wear. Areas of wear such as inside ring bands, can often expose a differnet coloured base metal.

Still can’t tell the difference? Bring your jewellery to our Warrington store and we’ll test it in seconds, free of charge and with no obligation to sell.

Does plated jewellery have any scrap value?

Because the precious metal layer is only a few microns thick, plated jewellery has virtually no melt or scrap value. The item may carry value if the base metal has value, for example gold plated silver. Refiners would spend more extracting the coating than the metal is worth. For the best return, focus on solid gold, silver or platinum pieces.

Absolutely. As dedicated jewellery buyers, we will purchase all gold, silver and platinum items in any condition, whether the pieces are scratched, broken, snapped or missing stones. If you wondering how to sell broken gold jewellery at a fair price. We will value the damaged pieces based on weight and purity. Our process is really simple:

    • Specialist testing: We will weigh and verify purity (9ct, 18ct, 22ct, sterling silver, etc.)
    • Competitive scrap rates: Because we specialise in recycling precious-metal content, even damaged jewellery will achieve the same valuation as complete items. We pay region leading prices per gram.
    • Sustainable upgrade: Turning snapped chains, bent bangles, or cut rings into quick money lets you buy something new and wearable.

We suggest you ensure that you genuinely want to sell your jewellery as once we purchase it, it will be melted, recycled and sold into the jewellery trade to make more beautiful pieces.

Yes, immediate payment is standard at Cheshire Gold Xchange.

    • Visit our Warrington store: We analyse your items on the spot with advanced XRF testing and pay cash (subject to limits) or instant bank transfer before you leave.
    • Sell gold jewellery online with confidence: Request a free, insured postage pack. We will have an offer to you on the day of receiving your items. Once you approve our offer, enjoy a same-day bank transfer or insured cash dispatch (up to £2,500).

Is ID required when selling gold/silver jewellery?

Yes. If you decide to sell your jewellery in-store, under the UK Money-Laundering Regulations, all high value dealers will require one form of photo ID to be presented. We will accept a current photo driving licence or passport. These simple ID checks protect both you and us from any fraudulent activity and is standard practice for reputable buyers.

Is Now A Good Time to Sell My Jewellery?

Precious metal prices are trading close to record highs in 2025, with price records being broken for gold and silver. Spot prices move every minute while the markets are open. The prices are driven by global demand, supply and currency movements. As we peg all our offers to the live spot price and refresh the prices displayed on our website every five minutes, you’re guaranteed to receive an accurate, up to date, and true market value for your jewellery.

Ultimately, the right moment to cash in comes down to your personal circumstances and motivations. However, when prices sit at or near all time highs, it’s rarely a bad time to unlock the value in jewellery you no longer wear.

Do you offer home visit valuations?

Yes, we do. We can offer mobile valuations and can meet you anywhere in the Cheshire area including Warrington, Helsby, Frodsham, Runcorn, Widnes, Northwich, Lymm, Altrincham, Knutsford, Manchester, Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, the Wirral, Heswall and Chester. We have a mobile XRF scanner and scales, so we are able to offer you accurate, fast and efficient valuations away from our store. This type of valuation is reserved mainly for larger value collections, but please call us to discuss your requirements.

Can I Get A Jewellery Valuation Over The Phone?

Yes, you can! Give us a call and tell us the jewellery type, approximate weight and if you can see any hallmarks to identify purity and we’ll give you a realistic ballpark figure on the phone. The final offer will be confirmed once we scan and weigh the item ourselves.

My jewellery has no hallmark, can I still sell it?

Yes, you can to the right buyer. The UK Hallmarking Act 1973 only applies to traders “in the course of business,” so there is no restriction on private individuals selling un-hallmarked jewellery. Not all buyers will purchase un-hallmarked pieces, but at Cheshire Gold Xchange we have the sophisticated equipment to tell us the exact purity without relying on hallmarks. We will buy any pieces bought internationally or older heirloom pieces without any reduction to our offer.

Is my jewellery worth more than scrap value?

Designer label or branded pieces can command a premium above melt value in some circumstances. For example, we may pay higher above our usual price per gram for a gold Cartier wedding band, this is because the brand name can carry value in addition to the precious metal value. This pricing is reserved for high end branded pieces. For modern mass-produced items, that are not manufactured by a luxury brand, that may be considered “every-day wear”, this will usually sell for its intrinsic metal value.

Does gold colour alter the payout?

Yes, we do. Its a common misconception that different coloured gold’s will attract different valuations.

There are various colours of gold jewellery commonly seen including yellow, white, and rose gold, these are all manufactured in various purity (carat) levels. If you are looking to sell rose gold or white gold jewellery, you will receive the same price as our usual yellow gold offers. This is because despite the colour, the gold content is established by the hallmark stamp, so 9 carat rose or white will have the same pure gold content as yellow, and thus the same price. It is just the choice of alloys mixed with the gold that changes the colour, or a plating layer.

Sell your silver jewellery to Cheshire Gold Xchange

We purchase all sterling silver (925) and higher grade alloys. Including:

    • Chains, pendants, brooches, cufflinks and charm bracelets
    • Foreign or antique silver marked 800, 835, 900 or Britannia 958
    • Mixed lots—perfect for clearing a jewellery box in one visit

Do you buy vintage or antique jewellery?

Yes, we do. As we are specialist precious-metal buyers, our offers for antique jewellery reflect the metal content rather than any collectable value. In rare circumstances antique pieces of jewellery may achieve higher prices in auction. For example, if the piece is made by a notable historic designer or jeweller this may carry a price premium. Remember, age alone doesn’t instantly guarantee value above gold or silver weight. If you prefer a fast, risk-free pay out, no auction fees, and no waiting then bring your vintage pieces for a on the spot valuation. You’re always welcome to seek multiple opinions first; we’ll still be here if you choose a direct sale later.

Can I Sell Middle Eastern & Indian Gold Jewellery?

Yes you can sell Indian gold, we buy all Asian gold and Gold sourced from the Middle East. Indian Gold is often identified by its intricate designs, craftsmanship, and cultural significance. Indian gold jewellery is an essential part of Indian culture and tradition, often worn during weddings, festivals, and special occasions. Indian Jewellery designs can vary greatly, ranging from heavy, ornate pieces adorned with precious stones to more delicate, simple items.

We are a leading buyer of Indian Gold Jewellery, and Middle Eastern gold jewellery. Bring your items to us for a quick price valuation, or order your selling pack online.

Sell Wedding Bands & Engagement Rings

Rings come in a wide variety of sizes, styles, carat and materials. You can sell any Gold, Silver, and Platinum rings to us. We can offer you premium pricing for your unwanted rings. From wedding bands to eternity rings we understand it can be difficult selling jewellery that has a certain amount of sentimental value. We also specialise in buying sovereign rings, if you are looking to sell a sovereign ring, you can also see our sovereign coin selling page, for more specific pricing.

We are paying the highest prices in Cheshire for your unwanted pre-owned rings. Although we do not pay out on gemstones, we are often priced higher than many jewellers just on our metal content pricing.

    Sell Necklaces and Bracelets

The most common type of bracelet and necklaces we see are curb chains. A curb chain features interlocking links usually with a flattened side to give a smooth appearance. Curb chains come in various sizes and weights and are usually easy to price as they do not contain any gems or stones.

You can also sell all types of bangles and charm bracelets. Bangles usually contain a high metal content, where as charm bracelets can be more difficult to sell as they usually contain a lot of non precious metal material. We can price all bracelets within a couple of minutes if you bring them in-store to us.

What Other Types of Jewellery Can I Sell?

We understand your jewellery box may be full of treasures of carious kinds, some of which may be high value and you don’t realise. Whether its an heirloom jewellery piece that does not work with your style, or some old necklaces, bracelets, or chains that have been damaged or broken, our expert team is at the ready to offer you an incredible price for your jewellery. Here is just a few examples of the types of jewellery you can sell. Remember if its made of gold, silver, or platinum we will buy it!

    1. Antique and Heirloom Pieces: Are you looking to sell any antique brooches or vintage wedding bands? We appreciate the craftsmanship and history of antique jewellery. Our specialists can assess your antique jewellery and price these items, giving you the opportunity to earn quick cash for your unwanted treasures. Some examples of antique jewellery you can sell to us are below:

    – Victorian (period 1837-1901): Iconic in the antique scene, Victorian jewellery can be characterised by its ornate designs and romantic motifs, often incorporating snakes, hearts, and bows. Common materials used in Victorian jewellery include gold, jet, and seed pearls.

    – Edwardian (period 1901-1910): Edwardian pieces are known for its elegance and use of platinum and diamonds. Designs often feature garlands, ribbons, and lace patterns.

    – Art Nouveau (period 1890-1910): Similar to Victorian, Art Nouveau jewellery often features natural objects such as flowers, insects, and birds, often in flowing, asymmetrical designs. Materials like opal and moonstone are common.

    – Georgian (period 1714-1837): Georgian pieces generally feature intricate metal work and use of precious stones. These pieces are rare and often handcrafted, making them highly valued.

    2. Dress Watches: We buy vintage and modern watches which are made from gold or silver. Many customers sell their gold vintage pocket watches to us for very high prices. We are also a specialist dealer in Rolex watches, so if you are looking to sell a pre-owned Rolex please get in touch.

    3. Designer Jewellery: If you own designer jewellery from brands like Tiffany & Co., Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, or others, we are interested in purchasing these for their intrinsic and brand value.

We strive to make the selling process as easy and as least daunting as possible. Our precious metal buying experts will guide you through each step, explaining how we price your items and offering immediate cash payments or bank transfers. You are under no obligation to sell until you accept our offer.

Remember, the condition of your jewellery doesn’t need to be perfect. We recognise the value in all pieces, and we’re here to ensure you receive a fair valuation.

    Sell Your Tangled Gold Chains

It’s a common problem when we throw our super thin curb, or rope necklaces into the dressing table drawer, when we come to get them out again they have miraculously tangled themselves into a tight gold knot! We often never bother wearing these again, as these tangled necklaces can be extremely difficult to separate, the gold chain links can often get damaged or bent in the process rendering them unwearable. At Cheshire Gold Xchange, we buy anything gold, including those pesky, tangled gold chains, and transform them into quick cash for you.

Even if your gold chains are in a tangled mess and seem worthless, these are still made from an extremely valuable metal. Gold’s worth is determined by its weight and purity, no matter the condition. So even if your gold chains are knotted into a ball, they still hold significant value.

Even if your gold chains are tangled and seem unusable, they still contain a highly valuable precious metal. Gold’s worth is determined by its weight and purity, not by its condition. So, even if your chains are knotted beyond recognition, they still have significant monetary value.

We buy all gold chains, necklaces, and bracelets whether they are tangled, broken, snapped or in great condition. You can sell tangled gold necklaces from curb chains, rope chains, herringbone necklaces, belcher chain, ball chain, and venetian chains.

    Sell Masonic Jewellery

At Cheshire Gold Xchange, we love to buy Masonic gold jewellery due to the interesting designs, and details. For centuries, Freemasons have worn rings, pendants, cufflinks, and medallions not only to display their affiliation but also to embody the values of brotherhood, morality, and self-improvement. These pieces are often made from solid gold and feature iconic symbols such as the Square and Compasses, the All-Seeing Eye, or specialised emblems denoting higher degrees. You can sell Masonic gold jewellery at Cheshire Gold Xchange, and receive top pricing.
