How To Calculate Your Scrap Gold Value

Using our online scrap gold price calculator is easy. You will just need two pieces of information to use this calculator.

    • Your gold weight or item quantity.
    • The purity of your gold (carat) or the type of bullion if selling coins/bars.

Split your gold by carats / purity and weigh each carat separately. So if you have two 9 carat rings and three 18 carat rings, weigh all the 9 carat rings together and select ‘9ct Gold’ from the ‘Item’ drop-down menu, then enter the total weight into the calculator. You can then click the ‘+ Add More’ button to add a new line and enter the same information for 18ct. Enter your details and we will email a price to you instantly.

I don’t know the purity or weight of my gold?

Don’t worry you can post your gold to us or bring it in store and we can do the hard work for you.

How Can I Calculate My Gold Value Using the Calculator?

    1. Identify the gold purity: Find the purity hallmark on your gold.

    2. Weight Your Scrap Gold: Weigh your scrap gold with a precise scale, preferably on a digital scale with 2 decimal places.

    3. Use the Scrap Gold calculator: Enter the total weight of each carat into the gold value calculator then select the corresponding carat from the drop down menu.

    4. Consider timing: Scrap gold prices fluctuate by the hour so consider the right time to sell your gold jewellery.

How To Calculate Scrap Gold Value Manually

If you do not have access to a web based gold price calculator you can calculate the value of your gold manually just using the current gold fix price. To do this follow the below steps.

Step 1: Obtain the current gold spot price, we have this displayed in our website header. The gold spot price can be found in numerous currencies, find the price in GBP or your local currency. The gold price represents the global price of 1 troy ounce of 100% pure 24 carat gold.

Step 2: Once you have the gold fix price you need to find price per gram of 24 carat gold. To achieve this we need divide the spot price by 31.1035, as there are 31.1035 grams in 1 troy ounce.

Gold Spot price/31.1035 = Spot Price Per Gram

Example, if the current gold spot price was £1,800:

    1800/31.1035 = £57.87 (price per gram of 24ct gold)

Step 3: Once you have the price per gram of 24 carat gold you can then work out what the spot price is for the various purities/carats.

Each carat number represents a percentage purity. Some of these are listed below:

    • 24 carat (24ct): 100% gold
    • 22 carat (22ct): 91.7% gold
    • 21 carat (21ct): 87.5% gold
    • 18 carat (18ct): 75.0% gold
    • 14 carat (14ct): 58.3% gold
    • 12 carat (12ct): 50.0% gold
    • 10 carat (10ct): 41.7% gold
    • 9 carat (9ct): 37.5% gold
    • 8 carat (8ct): 33.3% gold

Using the appropriate percentage from the above list we can find the spot price of each carat. For example to find the price per gram today of 9 carat gold we would use the below formula.

Spot price per gram*0.375 = Spot price per gram for 9ct gold

Example using the 24 carat price per gram previously calculated at £57.87:

    57.87*0.375 = £21.70

This now gives us the spot price per gram of 9 carat gold, you can then multiply this by your gold weight to get you a total value.

Please be mindful when using this method as this will not mean you will receive this price from a gold buyer, gold dealers will work on a price that is a percentage of this calculation so they can make a small profit. You may expect to see gold buyers paying you around 80%-90% of the spot price.

How Do I Know What Carat My Gold Is?

Identifying the purity of gold contained in your gold jewellery or scrap gold is very important when coming to sell and allows you to be more aware of what pricing to expect. Below are some methods of identifying the gold purity in your items.

In the UK we have a strict system for marking genuine gold items using hallmarks. This provides an easy identification system for buyers and sellers to understand. These hallmarks include the carat value and the Assay Office mark where the item was tested and marked. In the UK you will often see the hallmark “375” for 9ct, and “750” for 18ct. You can see the full hallmark chart below.

If hallmarks are not present on your gold, there is a high chance the item is not genuine gold and may be costume jewellery. However, it is recommended to have your items professionally tested first. Please note that some hallmarks may not be seen easily with the naked eye, and may need a loupe or magnifying glass to be seen clearly.

How Much Is 1 Gram of Scrap Gold Worth?

The value of 1 gram of scrap gold will depend upon the purity of the gold, you can use our gold value calculator above to estimate the values of 1 gram of different gold purity’s. 1 gram of 24 carat pure gold will have a higher value than 1 gram of 9 carat gold as there is a higher gold content. 24ct gold is 100% pure gold content where as 9ct gold contains 37.5% pure gold as it is combined with other alloys.

Tips for Selling Your Scrap Gold

Shop Around: Get quotes from multiple buyers to ensure you’re getting the best price for your gold. Be careful of companies who can mislead you by displaying ‘up to’ pricing, where the prices advertised are for people selling unrealistic large weights of gold. You should also be cautious of companies showing the gold spot price in their calculators and marketing material instead of the price they actually pay.

Understand the Terms: Some gold buyers deduct refining costs or other fees. Ask for a clear explanation of any deductions and hidden charges.

Pricing Date: Make sure the gold dealers pricing is up to date and current, most cash for gold businesses will display a last updated date next to their price.

Check the Gold Buyer’s Reputation: Look online for reviews and check if the buyer is registered with any trade associations, ensuring reliability and trustworthiness in the transaction.

How Do you Calculate Your Gold Price?

When looking to sell gold you will find gold buyers offer varied pricing. Gold dealers calculate their pricing based on the global scrap gold price per gram and then deduct a small margin percentage to get their buying. This small percentage is the gold dealers profit, and how much profit each dealer makes depends on the business. So if you are looking to sell gold choose a UK gold buyer who has transparent pricing.

Are your Gold prices up to date?

The value of gold changes constantly so the gold price today will be different to tomorrow. All our gold prices displayed online are updated daily within working hours. The prices fed into our scrap gold price calculator are dynamic and based upon the live UK gold price. We display the last updated date above our gold price calculator.
