How To Calculate Your Gold Watch Value
Using our online gold price calculator to value your watch is straightforward. If you don’t know the exact gold-only weight, use the quick rules below to estimate it safely.
1. Weigh your watch or bracelet.
- If your watch is on a leather or rubber strap, remove the strap and weigh the watch head only.
- If you have a solid-gold bracelet, you can weigh the whole watch (or the bracelet on its own).
2. Estimate the gold-only weight.
- Head only (no gold bracelet): use 60% of the head weight (deduct 40% for movement, crystal and fixings).
- Watch with solid-gold bracelet: use 80% of the total weight (deduct 15% for pins/springs/clasp internals).
- Bracelet only: use 90–95% of the bracelet weight.
3. Pick the carat and enter the gold-only weight.
- Choose the correct carat in the calculator and enter your estimated gold-only weight.

Our Incredible Customer Reviews
We pride ourselves on providing a 5-star rated service.
At Cheshire Gold Xchange we specialise in buying gold, therefore we can pay extremely highly for your unwanted gold watches. Whether you are looking to sell a vintage gold pocket watch or a modern solid gold Omega wristwatch, we are able to provide you with a rapid, secure and high-value selling process.
Types of gold watches you can sell
Gold at high purity is a notoriously soft metal, meaning it scratches and dents very easily. You can sell a gold watch in any condition to us, whether the watch is broken or damaged, we can provide you with our best cash offer. Regardless of whether your watch is made of rose gold, white gold, or yellow gold, what truly matters is the gold purity (carat) content.
1. Gold Wristwatches
- Classic Models: We purchase gold wristwatches from any brand including renowned watch brands such as Rolex and Omega. These watches often hold significant value due to their craftsmanship and brand prestige.
- Modern Designs: You can sell contemporary gold watches, whether from a luxury watch brand or boutique watchmakers. These watches often feature innovative designs and cutting-edge technology and can be produced in low numbers.
2. Gold Pocket Watches
- Antique Pocket Watches: Many antique gold pocket watches are valuable both for their gold content and their historical significance. We buy gold pocket watches from the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries.
- Modern Pocket Watches: Even modern gold pocket watches, which may not have the same historical allure, can still fetch a good price based on their gold content and high-end craftsmanship.
Understanding non-precious metal parts
When looking to sell a gold watch for cash, it’s crucial to understand that if the watch is being bought based on gold weight, not all the watch components are made from solid gold. Parts such as the sapphire crystal, hands, dial, movement and clasp components as well as bracelet screws may be made from other non-precious metals such as steel.
- 1. Exclusion of Non-Gold Watch Components: During the valuation process, we can provide a non-destructive valuation by excluding the weights of the non-gold components in the watch based on estimates. We will aim to remove any of the easily accessible non-gold parts of the watch. For the hard-to-reach parts, and to protect the integrity of your watch we can work on weight estimates.
- 2. Accurate Valuation: By focusing on the pure gold content only, we are able to provide an accurate and fair valuation that reflects the true worth of your watch’s precious metal content.
How to sell your gold watch
- 1. Initial Assessment: Bring your gold watch to our store or send it via our secure postal service (maximum postal value £2,500). Our experts will perform an initial assessment to determine its authenticity and gold content. Please note we do not buy any gold-plated watches.
- 2. Detailed Analysis: Using precise techniques such as acid testing and X-ray fluorescence testing (XRF), we analyse the purity of the gold. This step is crucial for providing an accurate and fair offer. Modern gold watches are often made from 14ct or 18ct gold.
- 3. Offer and Payment: Based on the gold purity and weight, we will make a competitive cash offer. If you accept our offer, we can proceed with the payment immediately. We offer same-day payments via bank transfer, or cash.
Why choose us to sell your gold watch?
We have been buying gold for over 15 years. We specialise in providing fair valuations for any item made from solid gold.

- 2. Transparent Process: We believe in transparency. Our valuation process is straightforward, with no hidden fees or pricing gimmicks. We offer a no-pressure selling environment allowing you to take the time to make the right decision.
- 3. Customer Satisfaction: We pride ourselves on providing exceptional customer service. Our numerous 5-star reviews on Google reflect our commitment to customer satisfaction.
Preparing your gold watch for sale
- 1. Clean Your Watch: While we will handle a watch in any condition, a quick wipe-down can help present your watch in the best light. A wipe-down can also remove dirt from hallmarks, which will make these more easily readable and speed up the valuation process.
- 2. Gather Documentation: If you have any original purchase receipts, certificates of authenticity, guarantee documents, or service records, bring them along with you. These documents can add to the value of your watch and assist in the verification process.
- 3. Consider Removing Personal Engravings: If your watch has any personal engravings, you might want to consider having them removed before the sale. However, this is not mandatory and can be discussed during the gold valuation process.
Can I sell a damaged or broken gold watch? We buy gold watches in all conditions. Even if your watch is damaged or not ticking, it still holds value based on its gold content and we can price this highly.
Can I sell a gold-plated watch? Unfortunately, we do not buy gold-plated watches as the metal contains very little actual pure gold content. How do you determine the price of my gold watch? The price of your gold watch is based on the current gold spot price, the weight of your watch and the gold purity.
Can I sell my gold watch online? Yes, we offer a secure and insured postal service for selling your gold online. Simply request a free selling pack, send us your watch, and we’ll handle the rest.
What happens to the non-gold parts of my watch? The non-gold parts of your watch will be removed and may not be returned, depending on the condition and type of watch. Our primary focus is on accurately valuing the gold content. Often the non-gold components have very little resale value.
