This system does have its draw backs as the x-ray penetration can only go around 15-20 microns deep. For large gold bars and other heavy gold items, we can drill deep into the gold and then XRF the drill shavings to establish gold purity. This system is perfect for. Smaller items, such as jewellery, and coins, can be analysed by our XRF gone without any damage leaving the jewellery fully intact.

    2. X-ray Exposure: The sample is exposed to X-rays, causing it to emit secondary (fluorescent) X-rays.

XRF can provide results in a matter of seconds but may not be as precise as fire assay for determining gold purity as the sample area the X-Rays are directed to is quite small.

    Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA)

    INAA is a highly sensitive and precise method used primarily for geological gold samples and forensic investigations. It involves irradiating the gold sample with neutrons, causing the elements to form radioactive isotopes. The process includes:

    1. Neutron Irradiation: The sample is bombarded with neutrons in a nuclear reactor.
